How to Join the Nigeria Police Force


Without doubt considering a career with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is an attractive career option, though Over the years the NPF has experienced series of endemic problems such as lack of proper training, inefficiency, and indiscipline, Corruption and dishonesty And all this make people to loose interest in the profession.
Putting all these Negative aside,  you’ll agree with me that the role of Nigeria Police Force in Nigeria cannot be over emphasize. They have help to maintain security of life and property and as well as peace and order in Nigeria for long.

Despite the fact the some corrupt and indiscipline officer among the force has tried to paint the profession black, the NPF still remains a noble Profession till date.
Below is a Detailed guide on how to join the NPF.
Basically the NPF recruit personnel into the organization through two windows which are;
  • Recruitment through the Nigeria Police Force Academy and;
  • Recruitment through Police Service Commission Personnel Recruitment

Recruitment through the Nigeria Police Force Academy

The Major window for adding new personnel into the Nigerian Police Force is through the Nigerian Police Academy. Graduates of this Academy are enlisted into the NPF, after undergoing a combined academic and Police training for a period of Five (5) Years leading to Bachelor’s degrees, they will be commission into the Nigeria Police Force as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

Method Of Application

Interested Applicants will have to visit the Nigeria Police Academy’s Website: www.polac.edu.ng in order to obtain or generate Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) Code.  The RRR code obtained can be used to make payment of N3,000.00 through any commercial Bank Branch in Nigeria.
Applicants must, in addition, apply through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board as well as sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Candidates need not select the Police Academy as a university of choice in the JAMB form.  However, only candidates who obtained the minimum UTME scores which is to be determined by JAMB and purchased the Academy online application form; will be eligible to sit for the Nigeria Police Academy Selection Examination.

Submission of Application

Applications are to be submitted online. On submission of the applications, candidates are required to download Acknowledgement Form. Candidates who obtained the minimum national cut-off marks or above, will be enabled to download and print their examination cards.

Available Course of Study in the Academy 

Currently below are the list of Courses that can be study in the Academy:
I)   Faculty of Humanities: BA in: English, Nigerian Languages & Linguistics, History & International Studies
II)  Faculty of Law: LLB
III) Faculty of Social and Management Sciences: BSc in: Accounting, Economics, Management Sciences, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology
IV) Faculty of ScienceBSc in: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Forensic Science, Mathematics, Physics

Admission Requirements 

The following are the Admission Requirements for Nigeria Police Force:
I) Candidates seeking admission into the Academy must satisfy the following condition;
  • Must be Nigerian citizens
  • must be between  the age of 17 and 22 years of age,
  • Height requirement: Male – 1.67 Metres (5 Feet 6 Inches)  and Femaile – 1.62 Metres (5 Feet 4 Inches) if female. In addition, male candidates must have an expanded chest size of not less than 91cm (36 Inches). All
  • Disability: candidates must be free from any physical deformity or mental disability.
II) Candidates must have obtained a minimum of SIX (6) credits at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) including a credit pass in English Language and Mathematics as well as other subjects relevant to the candidate’s chosen course of study in the Academy at not more than 2 sittings. the exam must be the one conducted by one of the following;
  • the West African Examinations Council (WAEC),
  • the National Examinations Council (NECO) or
  • the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB)
III) Candidates must also obtain satisfactory scores in both the written examination and the interview and must pass physical and psychological tests of fitness.
Note: SSCE STATEMENT OF RESULTS OR CERTIFICATES RELATING TO EXAMINATIONS TAKEN BEFORE 2012 WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Recruitment through Police Service Commission Personnel Recruitment 

The other Means by which the NPF recruits personnel into the organization is through normal recruitment process. Once positions are vacant or the NPF is short of personnel,the vacancy advert will be rolled out to the general public. there always certain requirements and qualifications attached to the vacancy and this depends on the position.
Below is the list of some Position in the NPF recruit and the required qualifications:

General Requirements for all applicants:

  • Be a Nigerian citizen.
  • Be certified mentally and physically fit by a Nigeria Police Medical Doctor or a Government Medical Practitioner.
  • Must not have any previous criminal reoord(s).
  • Must not be less than 1.67 metres in height for men. and 1.63 metres for women.
  • Must not have less than 86 em ,(34 inches) expanded chest measurement (for men).
  • Must present verifiable references from any two (2) of the following:
  • Traditional Rulers, Magistrate & Local Government Chairman. Heads of Educational Institutions attended, Career Civil Servant not below the rank of Grade Level 12, Police Officer not below the rank of CSP, or Mililary Officer not below the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
  • Possession ot a valid National Drivers License is an added advantage.
In addition to the above general requirements , applicants must satisfy the following position requirements:

Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police

  • Be between 23 and 28 years of age.
  • Have a Bachelors Degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND).
  • Have an N.Y.S.C Certificate.

Cadet Inspector of Police

  • Be between 23 and 28 years olage.
  • Have a minimum of either Ordinary National Diploma (OND).Advanced Level (A Level), National Certificate of Education (NCE) or their equivalent.
  • Possess  at least five (5) credit level passes (including Mathematics and English

Police Constables

  • Be between 19 and 25 year of age.
  • Have an O’Level certificate or its equivalent with at least five credit levef passes including Mathematics and English language in not more than two sittings.

Note: To apply for a Specialist position, candidates must possess relevant certificates and/orcredentials in the required technical discipline.
Warning: Any candidate who submits more than one application and/or gives false information would be disqualified and prosecuted.

2. login to either www.psc.gov.ng or www.npf.gov.ng and click on the CAREERS TAB;
3. Carefully read the instructions and make sure you understand the qualifications required for the position you wish to apply for;
4. Click on your desired position and make sure you follow the instructions carefully as you fill the form with accurate information;
5. On successful completion and submission of your form, you would be notified by a Screen Confirmation that your Application was correctly submitted;
